Reflecting on a Successful SEP Conference 2025

On April 10, 2025, the Prague University of Economics and Business hosted the SEP Conference 2025, focusing on the Social, Ethical, and Political aspects of Artificial Intelligence. Organised by the Prague Data Ethics Lab, the event brought together various voices across disciplines to explore how emerging technologies are shaping democratic societies, public trust, and global power dynamics.

The conference began with opening remarks by the Vice-Rector of VŠE, Associate Professor Ota Novotný, whose presence and support were greatly appreciated. Associate Professor Petra Guasti delivered the first keynote from Charles University, whose thought-provoking talk, “AI – Friend or Foe of Democracy?”, set a strong foundation for the rest of the afternoon.

The first session also featured a presentation by Jiri Korcak and David Pavlu from the Prague Data Ethics Lab on misinformation and influence operations in elections, followed by a reflection from journalist Jiri Burysek on AI oligopolies and democratic power in the United States.

After a short networking break, the second part of the program opened with a keynote by Dr. Richard A. Novak, chairman of the Prague Data Ethics Lab, on how AI is transforming global power structures. He was followed by Dr. Tomas Sigmund, who explored the evolving role of democratic governance in modern society. The session concluded with a joint presentation by Dr. Anna Novotna and Dr. Kamil Matula from the Silesian University in Opava, who shared insights into Gen Z’s relationship with democracy and political engagement.

The event closed with informal networking and conversations among participants from across academia, policy, and technology. The entire day reflected a shared interest in interdisciplinary cooperation and a commitment to addressing the challenges AI presents to democratic institutions.

We extend our sincere thanks to all speakers, participants, and institutional partners, and especially to Associate Professor Ota Novotný and Associate Professor Petra Guasti for their support and cooperation. We look forward to building on these conversations and continuing the exchange in future events.
